-chair for president obama's 2008 campaign but he is now a supporter of governor romney. >> good morning. you are is a said a supporter now. you had one of the prominent speeches at the rnc this year. what did you think of how your man did last night? >> i think had the most decisive begin in deet bait any scd candidate has had in the last 20 years. i'll be bipartisan about it. the two best debaters have been mitt romney and bill clinton in 1992. it was a decisive win on substance. mitt romney countered barack obama last night. came back at the president in a respectful way and the president didn't have answers. it was a win on substance last night. martha: you are obviously a unique political player and observer of this process. you are the co-chair of president obama's campaign back in 2008. what brought you to the place you are now as a supporter and surrogate for mitt romney just four years later? >> i'm like about 7 million americans who voted for the president who don't plan to do so again. i'm like many americans who were democrat at one point who moved away from the democratic party.

in four years. a lot of questions remain on those numbers. good morn ebb everybody, i'm bill hemmer. martha: good morning everybody, i'm martha maccallum. last time we saw rate this low, that would be january 2009, when president obama took office. the labor department says of these numbers, employers added only 114,000 jobs over the course of that month. so that raises a let of questions about this headline number. many jobs added are part-time jobs. bill: stuart varney, anchor of "varney & company" in the fox business network. you read what? >> there is widespread mistrust of this report and these numbers. there are clear contradictions. 873,000 people said they had found work but only 114 thou knew jobs were created that is contradiction. if you delve a little deeper, seems a lot of these people who found work, that would be, that is the 873,000, if you look deeply, it turns out 600,000 of those 873,000 people were part-time workers. so they came back into the labor force and they pushed unemployment rate down to 7.8% but there is a contradiction here, between the number of new j

in the "new york post" this morning. it appears people are used to those numbers and they are not blaming president obama for those numbers according to those polls. >> tell that to ought young people to don't have jobs or the 23 million who are unemployed or under employed. some of us may be lucky and have retained our jobs and those things may just be statistics. by that's what has to do. he has to explain to people that behind those statistics are real people and real pain. martha: one of the thing that has not been achieved by the romney campaign is the feeling that he can change things and he believes that you don't have to settle for where we are. you don't have to get used to this so-called new normal. that you can do better. it seems to me that's part of his argument. >> you are exactly right. and that's part of what he has to put forward tomorrow night. and i suspect that that's part of what he intend to put forward. but you are right on target. martha: we heard about the zingers and one liners that have been worked on to a certain extent. what do you think about that? >> i'm no

morning. >> reporter: good morning, martha. >> when you see president obama sa have that awe schukes moment -- >> they always play down themselves as a debater, we see it all the time. it's tiresome, predictable and meaningless. martha: what do you think of mitt romney with regard to the debates, how ready do you think he is? >> he raised his game as a debater between 2008 and 2012. he was pretty effective in the debates this year. he kept his cool, his composure, he kept that sort of smile on his face and remained at least visibly unrattled by whatever happened, and when he had to do it and go on the attack he did it and we all remember the debate i guess it was in florida with newt gingrich where he basically took gingrich's pants off on the issue of what was in his investment portfolio and won that state by a big margin. this is obviously tk- different. it's a national audience, not a republican audience, he has to win people over. it's a different kind of challenge over a sitting president who is pretty smooth performer. what john roberts said is right, debates sometimes make a d

the vice president joe biden it would really create a story of obama-biden on the ropes. and, romney-ryan on the move. bill: the way mike murphy explains it, republican strategist on "meet the press" sunday morning, democrats could be desperate. do you agree with that? >> they're certainly very worried. the degree of concern they had over the president's performance in denver is much deeper than we even thought. they're very, very worried about that. they're looking for joe biden to come out and deliver a lot of zingers and attack lines that barack obama didn't. this is the second chance in the presidential debate. there is not another actual presidential debate until october 16th. bill: listen how paul ryan explains how he sees vice president joe biden. >> he is fast on the cuff. he is a witty guy. he knows who he is and been doing this for 40 years. so, you're not going to rattle joe biden. joe biden has been on the national stage. he ran for president twice as sitting vice president. bill: probably a smart strategy. what he is saying there, be careful and do not underestimate the
